With the regular season halfway done, we figured it was a great time to extrapolate out what the 2017 playoff field could look like in NASCAR's new points format. The introduction of stage racing and added bonus points has made the playoffs - remember, it's no longer the Chase - a bit more complicated. Drivers can earn points for the playoffs through race wins and stage wins and bonus points are given for the drivers in the top 10 in points. The playoffs will be run a bit differently too. The fourth year of NASCAR's elimination-style playoff system will allow drivers to carry over bonus points through the first three rounds this year. Jimmie Johnson is now tied with Cale Yarborough. Johnson sprinted ahead of Kyle Larson on a restart with two laps to go and was ahead on the backstretch past the overtime line as a huge crash started behind the leaders. Johnson was declared the winner because he was ahead at the moment of caution. After a fiasco finishing the 2015 fall race at Talladega, NASCAR changed the rules to end races before the beginning of the 2016 season and installed a line on the backstretch. If the race was in overtime and the leader of the race was between the overtime line and the white flag when a caution came out, the race would be declared over. It's the first time the overtime line has come into play in the Cup Series. The victory is Johnson's 11th at Dover - the most of any driver - and the 83rd of his career. It ties him with Yarborough for sixth-most all-time in the Cup Series and puts him one victory away from tying Bobby Allison and Darrell Waltrip with 84 wins. The bar for success was absurdly high. A year after leading 392 of 400 laps to win his first Coca-Cola 600, Truex led 233 laps. Though he finished third after he was passed by Kyle Busch on the final lap. The good news is that coupled with Kyle Larson's woes, the finish was good enough for Truex to inherit the regular-season points lead for the first time in his career.
